IRENE CARA

Irene catapulted to stardom in 1980 when she won the role of Coco Hernandez in the box office smash "Fame". She would go on to make Academy Award history that year becoming the only performer ever to sing two Academy nominated songs, "Fame" and "Out There on My Own" - in one evening.

In 1983 Irene added to her stardom - winning an Academy Award for best original song when she wrote and sang "What A Feeling" for the hit movie "Flashdance". The song would become a No.#1 record, and later that year earned Cara a Grammy Award. Recently, "What A Feeling" was ranked #67 on VH-1's 100 greatest dance songs.

At the height of Irene Cara's success and popularity, much of it would come tumbling down. In 1985 Irene filed a 10 million dollar breach law suit against her former record company. The lawsuit would evolve into a bitter and costly battle over the next eight years. Finally, in 1993 she won her case and was awarded 1.5 million dollars. A pale victory considering the effect the law suit had on her career.
